In this activity, students can practice measuring themselves with non-standard units.
This activity may also help students with graphing as well as making comparisons
Objective: Students will measure height using non-standard units. Students will make estimations of height.
Materials:
Activity
Cut several pieces of yarn in multiple lengths, some very long (more than 5 feet), some very short (less than 3 feet), cut some about the height of your average student.
At the front of the class, hold up the yarn for the whole class to see. Have students estimate which piece of yarn is closest to the teacher's height, which one is closest to the student's height (have one student come up and stand next to yarn for reference).
Talk to the class about estimating. What skills do they use to estimate? How did they know that the very long yarn was much taller than their classmates?
Now cut a piece of yarn that is as tall as each student. (You may be able to have students pair up and caught the yarn for their partner).
Once each student has a piece of yarn, tape them up on a sheet of paper or the board. Put the student's photograph at the top.
Have students complete a short worksheet comparing themselves to a friend in the class.
Assessment:
As students are answering questions about estimation, evaluate their responses Do they understand how to make relatively accurate comparisons? Are they familiar with the term estimation?
